Madonna’s initial bid for adoption was rejected after a judge ruled prospective parents must live in the country 18 to 24 months.  During Fridays’ hearing, Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo called the so-called residency requirement an “old law.”

Madonna released the following statement to US Magazine through her publicist Liz Rosenberg.

“I am extremely grateful for the Supreme Court’s ruling on my application to adopt Mercy James. I am ecstatic. My family and I look forward to sharing our lives with her.”

This will be Madonna’s second child that she adopted from Malawi, the first was David, 3 in 2006.

The Aussie movie star and his wife, Deborra-Lee, have two kids who they adopted as babies from America – Oscar, eight, and three-year-old Ava.

But, like Madonna, their hopes of giving a home to a Third World child were crushed by rules that made it virtually impossible to adopt from Africa or Asia.

Speaking exclusively Britain’s The Sun, Hugh – who hit cinema screens this week as razor-clawed X-Men character Wolverine – said: “The adoption laws in Australia are too restrictive. Of course, checks need to be made. But they had a very negative approach.

“It was like they were trying to discourage you. There are 130million orphans in the world – who is looking after them? If you are a citizen of the world, on some level they are all our responsibility.

“And if you have got parents who want to adopt and there are children who need a home, it seems like a no-brainer.

“There are not that many children in Australia who need adopting, so we looked internationally and that is what is difficult.”

The couple turned to adoption after actress Deborra-Lee, 53, suffered repeat miscarriages. But they insist they would have done it regardless.

Hugh, 40, said: “We tried and it just didn’t happen for us. There was no particular medical reason.

“We had a few miscarriages, which was very upsetting. But we always planned on adopting anyway, even if we had our own biological children.”

He said he could understand Madonna’s desire to add to her brood – Lourdes, 12, Rocco, eight, and three-year-old David Banda, who she adopted from Malawi in 2006.

And he is sickened by cynics who applauded an African judge’s decision to reject her bid to become mum to baby girl Mercy James earlier this month.

Hugh said: “I challenge anyone who thinks you adopt a kid for a publicity stunt. Anyone parent knows that would have to be the most intensive publicity stunt in the world. I am sure she is coming from a good place.”

However, unlike the pop queen, Hugh has no plans to expand his family.

Laughing, he continued: “We think about another adoption. Then every time we get on a plane with our two kids and are all crammed in together, we think maybe we will leave it at what we have.

A court in Lilongwe, the capital of David’s home country, has approved Madonna’s adoption case. Proceedings for the adoption began in 2006 and Madonna was accused of abusing her celebrity status to smooth over the adoption process. Alan Chinula, Madonna’s lawyer, said, “It is a positive and beautiful judgment that will have an impact on Malawi’s adoption laws,”

But Dr Tsegaye Berhe, head of the Wide Horizons for Children agency, told the Reuters news agency it was “media hype by unethical journalists”.

At the time of the adoption, Zahara’s grandmother sent a letter to the court which said child’s mother was dead. “The court in Addis Ababa approved the adoption after studying the document her grandmother wrote,” said Dr Berhe.

“The grandmother brought three witnesses to court who testified that Zahara’s mother had died and that her father was unknown.

“The court also investigated the social status of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt before approving the adoption,” he added. Dr Berhe said the adoption was “legal and irrevocable”.

In 2002, Jolie adopted her first child, Maddox, from Cambodia and three years later Zahara was introduced to the family. Jolie’s partner Brad Pitt later applied to become their adoptive father. Last year the couple celebrated the birth of their first biological daughter, Shiloh Nouvel, in Namibia, Africa. In March, Jolie adopted a three-year-old boy from Vietnam, Pax Thien Jolie-Pitt.

45-year-old singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow and her new son Wyatt graced the cover of Ok! magazine.

Sheryl, who went through a closed, out-of-state adoption had this to say “He will know he’s adopted. He will know as much as he wants to know about his family. And if the time comes that he wants to meet his birth family, I will help him with that. I think it will come about when it comes about. When he’s old enough to understand it, we’ll talk about it. By then he’ll already know and love me as his mom”.

That’s great…I love when people want to adopt. I wish more people would.

But this next remark pisses me off.
“I’m done with the whole idea of having my own children”.

Does Katherine think when when she adopts they won’t be her own?
Does she want to be a mother to someone else’s children?

What she should have said was “I’m done with the idea of having biological children”.

I think she should spend some time with families that have adopted before she makes an important decision like this.

She should also print this out and tape it to her hand before her next interview.

Natural Child: Any child who is not artificial.
Real Parent: Any parent who is not imaginary.
Your Own Child: Any child who is not someone else’s child.
Adopted Child: A natural child, with a real parent, who is all my own.

Singer Sheryl Crow announced on her website today that she has adopted a two week old baby boy.

Hey Everybody,
I am so excited to share with you guys that I’ve adopted a little boy ..he was born 2 weeks ago.
His name is Wyatt (after my dad) Steven (after my little brother and Scooter) and we are enjoying some very private family time.
Just wanted you to be the first to know.
