Many of us remember bedtime rituals that included Goodnight, Moon and Pat the Bunny or a Halloween tradition that included The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. If you have strong memories of these or other books, chances are that what you remember most are the warm feelings associated with having a loving caregiver (parent, grandparent, favorite babysitter, etc.) reading those books to you.

As parents, we read aloud to our children for several reasons. Reading to our children promotes literacy. It fosters bonding and attachment by creating those shared memories and experiences that are such a formative part of our upbringing. The choice of books that we read helps teach our children things that we want them to know, such as our family values. And reading to our children provides an opportunity to talk with our children about things that we think are important.

For families formed through adoption, this opportunity to open a dialogue is the best argument for making sure that your home library includes a wide range of adoption books. Books such as Jamie Lee Curtis’s Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born or My Family is Forever by Nancy Carlson introduce adoption concepts in a positive way. When we read these books to our children we are modeling for them both the vocabulary of adoption and the idea that talking about adoption is acceptable and valuable. Other books, such as The Family Book by Todd Parr or Nina Pelligrini’s Families are Different introduce many types of family formations, helping children accept that adoption is just one way in which families might differ from one another.

As parents reading aloud to our children, we can use these books and stories of adoption to elicit our children’s feelings. For example, we might stop at an illustration and comment “When I look at the boy in this picture I feel sad because…” or “I think the girl in this story feels…” Sometimes we might ask our children to respond (e.g. “And what do you think?”) and other times we might let the moment pass. In either case, it’s important for us to reinforce the idea that sharing feelings is a positive and important part of being in a family. If we set the stage for our children to share their feelings with us when they are young, they are much more likely to come to us to share their feelings when they are older, and when those feelings become more complicated.

Books that talk about feelings in general, such as When Sophie Gets Angry…Really Really Angry or In My Heart by Molly Bang or Dave Cutler’s When I Wished I Was Alone are also valuable for adoptive families, although neither talks about adoption. Instead, these books help children understand how to identify and describe some of the feelings they may have. Another good example of this type of book is Jamie Lee Curtis’s book Today I Feel Silly: And Other Moods that Make My Day .

Our children will have different feelings about adoption as they grow – sometimes minute by minute! Having a range of books, including <a href="http://foreverparents.com/2009/12/childrens-adoption-books-2.html"title="" >children’s adoption books, in your home library and they will help your children process these feelings and understand that these feelings (and the fact that they change) are a normal part of growing up.

All families change over time. Sometimes a baby is born, or a grown-up gets married. And sometimes a child gets placed in foster care. Children need to know that when this happens, it’s not their fault. When a child gets adopted they need to understand that they can remember and value their birth family and love their new family, too. Straightforward words and full-color illustrations offer hope and support for children facing or experiencing change. For transracial and transcultural adoptees, domestic adoptees, and for children in foster care or kinship placements, celebrating the differences within their families as well as the similarities that connect them, is the foundation for belonging.
“I Don’t Have Your Eyes” helps kids go beyond ” blood” and “genes” as the only important ties between family members. Congratulations to Ms. Kitze for carefully considering the needs of the adoption community as she publishes her ‘adoption and empowerment- themed’ books.”

“I find this book to be very inspiring. I wish I had A book like this when I was a child. As an adult adoptee, I feel this book touches upon the most important connections we need to make with our children.”

Asia Press, a small press publisher of children’s books, today announced that it will not be re-printing its popular book, “Rosie’s Family; An Adoption Story” after the current run is sold out. This accurately written and creatively illustrated children’s book has sparked widespread interest amongst parents and teachers, providing them with a practical tool for discussing adoption with young children. Thought provoking and charming, Rosie’s Family has received rave reviews from a range of leading media, while grabbing the attention of adoption agencies and booksellers alike.

Rosie’s Family was recommended by “Savvy Mommy,” Victoria Pericon, when she appeared on New York City’s local television affilliate, WCBSTV,, to review <a href="http://foreverparents.com/2009/12/childrens-adoption-books-2.html"title="" >children’s adoption books.

“The illustrations are excellent in addition to clinically correct text,” reported Beth Malley, renowned adoptionn educator and author of Creating a Treasure for The Adopted Child.

“We support Rosie’s Family so strongly that we placed it in our post adoption resource kit which is given to the hundreds of families who adopt through us every year,” said Cathy Murphy, Manager of Regional Development for The Children’s Bridge, Canada’s largest English speaking adoption agency.

Today, one in six couples struglle with infertility and an increasing number are turning to adoption as a means to form their families. According to the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse, it’s estimated that 2% to 4% of American families include an adopted child. Inter-country adoption have been accelerating over the past decade and will likely continue. The result has been an increase in the number of inter-cultural and interracial families, which adds to the list of issues that adoptive families face.

“Rosie’s Family addressed the inherent issues related to interracial and multi-cultural adoption, in an easy-to-read format,” said author Lori Rosove. “The humorous and colorfully animated illustrations are attractive to children and helps in their understanding of adoption.”

Rosie’s Family is ideal for children 4-8 years old, but is also appropriate for parents and older children, including teenagers. It teaches the importance of embracing diversity and tolerance of differences amongst each other. The book addresses common adoption questions such as, “Why do I look different? Where did I come from? What were my birth parents like? Do I belong in my family?” Rosie’s Family makes it easy for parents to tackle this subject matter with their children, which if left unchecked, can leave children with unresolved concerns, possibly leading to serious affect on their self esteem development.

About the Author:
Lori Rosove is the founder of a leading adoption consultancy, Private Adoption Services, which provides services to individuals and agencies throughout the entire adoption process in both foreign and <a href="http://foreverparents.com/2011/04/tips-on-the-domestic-adoption-process.html"title="" >domestic adoption cases. She is also an innovative author of children’s books and created Rosie’s Family after receiving numerous requests from adoption parents for a child-friendly tool that would help them address many common issues with their children.

Our Adoption Shop carries five pages (with more being added all the time) of childrens adoption books, covering a wide variety of topics.

Children love to be read to and you can use these books as a tool to explain adoption to a very young child or as a comfort to an older child who may have questions. They were all written to help your child feel good about being adopted and you can use them to start discussions about any questions they may have.

My children’s personal favorite was the one written by Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers), Let’s Talk About Adoption.

Happy Reading!

Interview with Carrie Kitze:
We See the Moon by Carrie Kitze is a story written from the child’s perspective, asking the questions that may dwell in their hearts about their birthparents.

What inspired you to write the adoption book “We See the Moon”?

I was inspired by adult adoptees who talked about how they couldn’t talk to their parents about adoption issues because they felt it would make them feel bad. I didn’t want my daughters to feel they couldn’t come to me with some of the most important feelings they will have. I wanted a way to help them understand that this information is a part of who they are and always available for discussion. I also wanted a way for them to be able to connect emotionally with birthparents we may never have the opportunity to meet. The moon was a tool my grandmother used with me when I was little to connect us, so the moon became a tool for my daughters to connect as well. It also is a powerful symbol in many cultures. While I understood the importance of birthparents and preadoption history, until I listened to adult adoptees I did not realize how essential it is to include birthparents and preadoption history within the fabric of our children’s lives. Our children have learned to pick up on our subtle clues as to whether or not an issue is taboo or something not to discuss. Just because children don’t ask questions, doesn’t mean they aren’t thinking about these issues. Keep in mind that each child will process information differently and some need more discussion, some less. Opening up to these types of discussions builds a solid foundation for all types of conversations over a lifetime. One tool I developed for use with my own daughters is We See the Moon. This is a simple book that speaks with the voice of the child and allows them to ask the questions they have in their hearts about their birthparents. It has resonated with both children and parents alike and jumpstarted discussions about adoption and birthparents.

How do you approach this daunting part of adoption parenting?

It is best to use truthful, age-appropriate conversations. The conversations should be done early, gradually, and gently. Your conversations should be straightforward, honest, and matter of fact. The story you start with will be a skeleton to which you can add as your child’s understanding and comprehension grows. The most important thing we as parents can offer our children is the safe haven for discussion and the truth, as we know it. We also need to learn to listen for our cue to answer and the cue to let our children talk.

Fine tuning your communication skills is the best way to effectively teach your children how to understand express their feelings. Some things we need to teach our children include modeling feelings, both good and bad. Everyone has pleasant and unpleasant feelings and it is important to teach our children how to verbalize both. Parallel stories can be effective in helping your child verbalize these feelings. Using literature to help a child see that the feelings and thoughts they have are not unique and having your child talk about another character’s experiences can offer a glimpse into how your child is actually feeling.
