I am adopting a baby that will be born on May 17th. I have breast fed my bio children and produced plenty of milk and no problems breatfeeding. But, I just found out about this baby and only have 1 week to prepare. Can I breast feed with this small of a prep time and no meds? Will I produce milk if I pump every 2-3 hours from now til baby arrives in one week?

Thanks

I have been blessed with 5 beautiful children through adoption. Each came to us as infants, some through foster care, others direct adoption. My second son was a direct adoption but for legal reasons he didn't come into our care until he was 3 1/2 months old. I always thought that breastfeeding was a wonderful way to bond with your baby-especially when adopting. He was a week old when we found out about him so I started right then with taking domperidone and pumping. I was able to produce a few onces of milk fairly quickly(I have never been pregnant or nursed before), but unfortunately he had difficulty latching, I was nervous because I hadn't told my worker and felt she would see this as a taboo. So all things combined I only continued for about 2 months but I'm glad I did it and wished the opportunity would have been there for my other children. I would love to see awareness raised on this subject and it become a more positive possibility for more adoptive parents

I breast fed our adopted son for until he was 21 days old and didn't feed well after his late circumcision on day 18. I pumped for 6 weeks prior to his birth and began a medication created by our local compounding pharmacy that will increase the chance of lactation with stimulation as it's side effect. I produced 10ml with each pumping session prior to birth and after birth supplied about 30-40% of his intake needs. We utilized the Lact-aid supplies to supplement his milk needs. I never realized that nursing also causes uterine cramps when you aren't pregnant until I actually started breastfeeding our son. It was an amazing experience that is a growing opportunity for adopting mom's. I personally know of two other adoption mom's that have done so and all were thankful for the experience. Our local hospital's breastfeeding advocates program was really helpful in getting things in order prior to our son's birth.

I came across this site through google.com My husband and I are in the process of starting adopting. We are going to adopt an infant from birth. When I told a friend of mine about it, she said, you remember that you can nurse, right? I had forgot all about it as it was a few years back that we had talked about it. After doing a lot of research, I am very interested in nursing the baby. I don't know if I will produce much milk, but am also possibly going to try the medicine that will help produce if my doctor says it's ok. I am wondering if anyone knows if there is another good group like the La Leche League? Or is this pretty much it for a "Support" group?

I am very excited to start this process and wonder if anyone has had a good adoption experience? We are really nervous, but also very excited at the same time.
